1 tsp Salt |
Garlic Powder |
1 cup Hominy grits |
5 cup Water, divided |
Cheese, cubed or shredded |
6 pats Butter or margarine |
Put 4 cups water in a large saucepan, add salt and grits, stir well. Turn fire to high and when mixture comes to a boil turn heat down to medium-low, stir well and cover, venting lid. Cook and stir often to prevent sticking. Cook about 5 minutes (they'll start thickening) and add the remaining cup of water. Cook another 10 minutes stirring often. Serve hot in a bowl with a pat of butter, cheese and garlic powder on top. Grits are also good with just butter or a fried egg on top.
NOTE: Do not add grits to hot water or lumps will form that won't break up no matter how long you cook them!
